Fascinating work I saw at Aardklop today. This is Fascinating work I saw at Aardklop today. This is “Floor uprooting device” by @willemseemma
Knew I was going to get something wrong. It still speaks to me in those same concepts of climate grief and solastalgia
All the little pieces that fit. The tention, the sound, the uncanny feeling that you messed around with a living thing…and then broke it.

I started a sketch book type of thingy yesterday. I started a sketch book type of thingy yesterday. According to the graphs and images my doctor showed me, it looks (to me) like I’ve lost almost half of my vision in my left eye, despite the right eye also being affected of course. This from my early onset and, for too long, untreated, glaucoma. Luckily it is mostly peripheral vision loss and I found that when I work in smaller formats, everything shrinks into a manageable whole again. I still draw big, but It just becomes so much more effortless and enjoyable again to draw small like this.

Life is beautiful.

If I bump (literally) into you at an exhibition or somewhere, when you “suddenly’ appear on my left, you’ll now know why. 😂

“Red Rubber Black Gold”, pastel and gold leaf, “Red Rubber Black Gold”, pastel and gold leaf, was selected for the Portrait Awards top 40, which opened on Friday evening.
Congratulations to all the winners and to @rust_en_vredegallery for hosting another successful Portrait award for us!

Red rubber refers to the rubber slave trade in the Free State of the Congo during 1890 to 1910. Black gold is an expression used for petroleum or oil. The expression was first used in 1910.
My model was Zanna Katoka whom I met last year at an artist residency in Muizenberg South Africa. Originally born in the DRC, her parents fled the country when she was a young girl. Educated for a while in the USA, she preferred to come to South Africa to be with her parents even though the political climate was far from welcoming yet. She grew up in Benoni. She is currently living in Muizenberg where she met her partner and runs a surf camp and artist’s residency with him. She has a degree in marketing and is working on her own business endeavours as well. She has many family members still living in the DRC.

We were discussing the conflicts in her country of birth and she said that ever since she could remember, her country has always been at war. We were wondering: Why? Zanna is of the opinion that it is because of her country’s valuable resources. Rubber (in the past) and oil are only two of the DRC’s many available valuable resources. A country and people can be cursed by that which are rightfully theirs. I depict Zanna here also as a valuable and queenly person against a rich golden back ground.
This is the second portrait I made of Zanna. The first currently resides at @admirals.residence and is part of the residency’s growing art collection.

The Portrait Award exhibition will be on view at Rust-en-Vrede gallery, 10 Wellington Road, Durbanville until the 29th of October.
